Youth volunteers build wetlands boardwalk at environmental learning center in Robeson Township – Reading Eagle



A steady whirring sound echoed through Rock Hollow Woods as Steven Armstrong handily drove a 2-inch wood screw through a 6-foot length of deck plank.

Armstrong, 17, a senior at Twin Valley High School, was part of the team building a wetlands boardwalk at the nonprofit environmental learning center in Robeson Township.

A few yards down the trail, a second team carefully measured, then cut the planks with a circular saw.

The project of Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading ran through the past week.

The youth corps is a team-based service and learning program for youth and young adults, ages 11 through 18. 

Teams from Berks County worked on building the boardwalk, the first phase a of a two-part project.

The second phase will include building picnic tables for the 77-acre preserve along Rock Hollow Road.
